Penalties Lead to Up and Down Weekend to at USchool

The hard lesson the Ice Bears leaned this weekend at University School is good teams can capitalize on opportunities. The Bears were assessed 17 penalties in two games and saw their season record go to 2-1.

Fighting through physical play and being shorthanded, the Bears dropped their opening game 6-3 to Waupun in Friday afternoon’s match up. Waupun took advantage of a 5 on 3 in the 1st period and scored the game’s opening goal and never looked back. They ended the first leading by 2.

The Bears had the man advantage to begin the 2nd period only two fall behind 3 goals as Waupun scored shorthanded just 20 seconds in.  The Ice Bears got on the board when Junior Nate Kandel (West Bend West) buried his first of the year with assists to Zach Simbro (Slinger) and Carter Day (Grafton) at the 12 minute mark of the second.   Less than a minute later Waupun regained their 3 goal cushion extending the lead to 4-1 at the end of 2.

Junior Ethan Coughlin (West Bend West) notched his 2nd in as many games when his wrister from the blueline found its way to the back of net off a feed from Freshman Andy Butler (Germantown). Again Waupun regained its three goal lead than a minute later at 5-2.  Andy Butler tallied his 3rd of the season at the 9:30 mark of the 3rd with assists to Senior Eli Kopish (West Bend East) and Coughlin. Waupun sealed the victory with an empty net goal leading to the 6-3 final.

Junior Chris Clement (Slinger) stopped 25 of 30 Waupun shots in route to the Bears first loss of the season.

Saturday saw the Bears matched up against winless Waunakee and again the Bears were bitten by the penalty bug.  This game saw the Bears controlling the first period even while being assessed 2 penalties in the period.  Kandel again found the back of the net to open the scoring for the Bears on the powerplay.  Andy Butler was credited with the assist. 6 minutes later Junior Peyton Kesselhon (West Bend East) found the back of the net with helpers from Juniors Adam Butler (Germantown) and Cam Sullivan (Port Washington) to extend the Bears lead to 2.

The Bears found themselves back in the box three times in the 2nd giving Waunakee life as they cut the lead to 1 at the 12 minute mark of the period.  Sophomore Timm Snider (Port Washington) extended the Bears lead to two when he scored at the 14:28 mark of the period.

Waunakee found the back of the net 2 minutes into the 3rd and again cut the Bears lead to 1.  Junior Gavin Pickett (West Bend West) tried to shut the door on the Warriors when he buried his first of the year off a feed from Senior Riley McClarran (West Bend West).  The Bears were forced to tighten the screws on defense as they killed off a 5:00 minute penalty to keep the score at 4-2.

Clement stopped 22 of the 24 Warriors shots he faced on his way to his second victory of the year.

With their 2-1 record the Ice Bears hit Kettle Moraine Ice Center ice for the first time this season when they open up their conference schedule at 6:00 Thursday, November 30th taking on Homestead.
